Carter’s cool centenary of manufacturing in Brum
July, 2009
One hundred years on and Carter Environmental Engineers of Birmingham are still busy designing, manufacturing and installing a wide range of industrial water cooling & air pollution abatement equipment.
The company that began life as the Midland Heating & Ventilation Company in 1909 has held firm during the current downturn, and far from asking its 50 staff to work for less or temporarily for free, Carter actually awarded its team a pay rise at the beginning of 2009.
Three of the employees at the firm’s city centre home in Lawley Middleway – Alan Holmes, Steve Woodward and Charlie Smith -have each clocked up more than 40 years service, whilst the father of current Sales Director Colin Brown was an apprentice with the company before it became known as Carter.
“Our centenary celebration”, said Colin “is a big thank you to our loyal staff and a long service award to this company which is very much part of Birmingham’s manufacturing past, present and importantly, future. We are a living, breathing example that there’s still plenty of life in the city’s manufacturing”.
As part of the Carter Thermal Industries Group, Carter Environmental Engineers enjoys all the backing of one of the UK's most substantial privately owned engineering Groups. The Group employs in excess of 800 people, has approximately a quarter of a million square foot of manufacturing space and a turnover in excess of £65,000,000. All companies within the Group are committed to Engineering Excellence.

Bench-style dust extraction for Senior Aerospace
May 21, 2008
Carter Environmental Engineers (CEE) has installed a W50 Dustand Nonflam at the Bird Bellows division of Senior Aerospace to handle dust generated in titanium polishing operations.
At its Congleton plant the company designs and manufactures precision engineered metallic bellows, flexible joints and duct components for aircraft ducting systems and engine applications. Established products range in size from general aviation applications up to the largest units required for the Airbus A380.
The unit installed by CEE is designed to act as a bench for a double ended polishing machine, but can equally well be installed under existing workbenches. Recently introduced by CEE, the compact new W50 Dustand Nonflam wet dust extractor combines highly effective operation with unique space-saving characteristics. |

It is especially at home in operations where hot sparks are produced, as well as damp dusts that are ideally collected in water.
Improved features on the new W50 model include: better access to the scrubbing section for more effective cleaning; greater air flow capacity; more reliable water level control; improved scrubbing action; easier access to the inducer baffles.
Nonflam extractors are among the UK's most tried and trusted wet dust collectors, with proven performance over many years. They may be sized to meet most industrial applications and are a simple and robust unit for use with flammable, explosive or wet and sticky dusts.
The units can provide an inexpensive way of meeting a company’s obligations under the DSEAR legislation and ATEX Directive, due the virtually non-existent ignition risk. CEE can also supply all ducting and a full installation service, with advice on the latest COSHH requirements.
