Industry - Waste Management - Air
Introduction
Environmental recycling and reusing of the rubbish disposed of by industry and individuals requires the sorting classification and handling of waste. This process gives rise to a number of health, safety and environmental issues that need to be dealt with. The contaminants produced depend on the waste stream and processes used to handle and treat the waste. Waste streams are generally identified by the products being handled and the legislation governing the disposal of those products.
There are a number of studies being carried out by the Health and Safety Executive to determine the effects of these processes on the individuals within the plant, with concerns expressed over excessive exposure to Micro-organisms, Fungi, Bacteria, Endotoxins, Mycotoxins, Glucans and Volatile Organic Compounds and Odours. The handling and processing of waste will also have implications for the local environment and the emissions to atmosphere.
With the recent introduction of Waste Directives the handling and treating waste in a safe and environmentally friendly way is becoming a major concern. Solutions can be provided for the protection of employees, operators and the local area subject to the materials and processes being carried out. The unique combination of equipment supplied by Carter Environmental Engineers enables the best available technology to be applied.
Best available technology
Health and Safety, COSHH requirements met
Environmental Protection requirements met
Reduced DSEAR/ATEX requirements for potentially hazardous dusts
Airborne contaminants captured, controlled and cleaned from the air
Reduced and controlled use of water and chemicals
Liquors controlled and treated for discharge
Generous spacing in designs reduces the risk of blockage

Reception areas
Collected materials are received – either pre-sorted or mixed. Subject to the process dust, fumes and odours will be released into the atmosphere. This could range from the dust in a vacuum cleaner containing human and animal hairs dried skin etc to industrial waste materials etc. Release of contaminates as they needs to be captured, controlled and cleaned from the atmosphere as they are processed. The varying condition of the waste material makes the Cyclovent an ideal solution, and if required can be followed by a Carter Gas scrubber to remove any further odours that are present.
Processing areas
As the waste materials move through the sorting process dust vapours and odours will be generated and then released at various points through the process. By installing local extraction these emissions can be captured, controlled and cleaned from the air. This provides an effective and economic solution for the operator to meet health safety and environment requirements.
The range of processes involved in the handling of waste range from simple conveying, shredding and screening to drying, composting, incineration etc. All these processes can be effectively treated.
